When we first visited Mill Mountain, we were relatively impressed, and it was our first coffee shop in the burg. Mill Mountain seemed to have done things right, but against our reservations about Idego's closing time, we decided to give it a shot after all. Boy was that a good decision on our part! We're super smart.Colton: Idego is a pretty little place, shaped like a hallway with lots of windows. It's bright and inviting, and their espresso setup is legit. It's got two entrances: one in an alleyway, which a chalkboard sign leads you to from the street, and the other is off of a town square kinda thing with parking and twice a week it is home to a farmer's market. Twenty hipster points for that!
Laura: I have to say that we discovered Mill Mountain is a chain, which explains a lot. Needless to say I felt very betrayed. Idego is pretty great though; it's homey, has good coffee, and the baristas know what they are doing. Added bonus, there are still plenty of outlets and a unisex bathroom (all genders welcome :D). The only slight negative is that the coffee sometimes has a more than slight taste of peanuts. Which makes a dirty chai pretty weird. The other drinks I've had have been the vanilla latte (great), mocha (hard to fuck up), and the hot chocolate (with house made chocolate syrup). So, you know, can't complain too much.
Colton: The vanilla syrup is also homemade! I've mostly been getting cortados because hot damn cortados are on the menu, but yeah, their espresso blend is kinda strange. It isn't bad, and the espresso comes out great each time, but it's definitely blended on the nutty side. When I go for un-balanced espresso blends, I prefer those that err on the side of fruity/sweet. So far all of the baristas can do latte art, which, although frivolous for sure, is a good indicator of coffee quality. And they're chatty! Young college kids, but they at least chat about stuff, which none of our coffee joints have done, and is such an important part of the coffee shop experience.
Laura: They're cute. Their complaining about finals and homework makes me feel better about being out of school, until I remember my loan debt looming in the shadows. Always watching, always waiting. Oh! Idego's baked goods are also excellent. They have croissants as big as both your fists together and an apricot jam bar that is amaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazing.
Colton: I got a breve! It's not on their menu, so it was nice to have a good opportunity to go off-menu, which she didn't mind doing once I told her what a breve was. It was a delicious drink, and we got to cash in our first punch card. Having visited this, Mill Mountain, and another pretty alright coffee shop, we've settled on Idego as the spot for sure. To be clear, nothing can replace Meadowlark, and Idego wouldn't really measure up in comparison(their coffee is close, but the space and baristas could never be)
